Great Research Progress on AIE-based Fluorescent Hybrid Nanoprobe

  

Recently, a paper titled “Morphology-Tailoring of a Red AIEgen from Microsized
Rods to Nanospheres for Tumor-Targeted Bioimaging” was published in Advanced Materials (
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adma.201504782/pdf). This work was cooperatively published by Prof. Yongsheng Li`s group (School of Materials Science and Engineering, East China University of Science & Technology) and Prof. Weihong Zhu`s group (School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, East China University of Science & Technology).


For bio-imaging and tumor-targeting diagnosis, fluorescent bioprobes especially those with intense long-wavelength emissions and large Stokes shifts hold great potentials. Ideally, they are supposed to be capable of precisely extracting disease-related information from complicated biological systems owing to their high sensitivity and resolution, real-time monitoring capability and non-radioactivity. However, there is always a gap between ideal and reality. In fact, most fluorescent dyes in their natural states usually cannot reach the tumor sites due to their unsuitable size, shape or surface properties, etc. This work presents a convient and versatile “makeup” strategy to modulate the microsized rods of a near-infrared-emissive AIEgen into nano-scaled spheres via a self-assembly encapsulation process. The nanospheres outshine the microrods in terms of the brightness, photo-stability, biocompatibility, tumor-accumulation and targeting ability, making them perfect bioprobes for tumor-targeted bioimaging.
