The CAS Academician Ce-wen Nan visits ECUST

 

Invited by School of Materials Science and Engineering, Ce-wen Nan, the CAS academician and honored professor of ECUST visited ECUST on Dec 17th . He gave a lecture on “@WhichWhatWhy.Material” hosted by Changsheng Liu, who is the Dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering. With up to three hundred teachers and students attended the lecture.

First of all, Changsheng Liu made a speech to express warm welcome and heartfelt thanks for academician Ce-wen Nan. “Your fellow came to meet you!” The humorous introduction to Ce-wen Nan drawn a big round of applause from students.

 

During the speech, Ce-wen Nan introduced his growth path: he was admitted to the east China university of science and technology (major in glass in Department of inorganic materials) with excellent results from a small village in Hubei. The incomprehension from his family didn’t kill his enthusiasm to materials, but triggered his curiosity toward the unknown. When he came into contact with a Nobel Prize awarded topic in regarding with conduction and insulation of glass, he was largely inspired and made great effort on continuous deep research in this area, and finally became a well-known expert in material field.

 

Afterwards, Ce-wen Nan made a vivid and creative presentation to illustrate materials from three aspects. He gave an exclusive understanding about the courses he taught, with a funny couplet to express the effects of materials to human beings: The optical fiber that changes the way human communicate, the new glass invented by Corning Inc. that changes the conventional display mode, the photovoltaic materials and electrode materials that have the potential to ease the energy crisis, the special materials in related to national security... all of these novel fields and rich show let the audience have more understanding to the diversity of material world.

During the Q&A session, students took the precious chance to communicate with professor Ce-wen Nan. The questions covered various aspects, such as how to think and face “academic migrant workers”; how to make career plans for undergraduates, graduates and PhD students; how to quickly promote the development of research projects; what should we do in university, to focus on professional academics or develop in all fields; how to cultivate interest to majors, etc. Academician Ce-wen Nan answered all questions and communicated with students patiently.

Ce-wen Nan, Professor, PhD tutor, academician of CAE, got bachelor degree in ECUST in 1982, master degree in 1985 in ECUST, PhD (on-the-job) in Wuhan University of Technology in 1992. He is now the dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, also the director of ICF, Principal scientist of 973 Project in functional ceramic (from 2002 to now), Academy leader of National natural science foundation of innovation research groups (2006-2015).


Professor Ce-wen Nan’s research covering multiferroic materials and devices, organic-inorganic functional composites, solid state electrolytes and electrodes for lithium batteries, transition metal oxides, and calculations of microstructure-property linkages. He has published over 400 essays, referred 9000 times by others in SCI (H factor =48), one published monographs, 28 authorized patents, chaired several international and national academy meetings, invited to make speeches with over 40 times, and he has won the 2nd prize of nature science award in national wise once, provincial wise three times, and other foreign award twice.
